How can I find legal Airbnbs, guesthouses, and hotels in Hongdae or Myeongdong before booking?

Because booking platforms hide exact street addresses before payment, use the Tourist Zone Directory at https://notthek.com/stay-check to browse officially registered properties in Hongdae (Mapo-gu), Myeongdong (Jung-gu), Bukchon (Jongno-gu), Gangnam, Itaewon (Yongsan-gu), and Busan Haeundae directly from the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) registry.

Why did my Seoul Airbnb host tell me not to mention Airbnb to the security guard?

In South Korea, commercial Officetels (오피스텔) and apartments without a Foreign Tourist Urban Homestay license are illegal for short-term rentals. Hosts ask guests to lie to building security to avoid district office crackdowns. Verify your accommodation at https://notthek.com/stay-check before traveling.
